The UN sees with "good eyes" the new technologies
The UN has carried out development policies for blockchain technologies to meet its Sustainable Development Goals.
The UN experiments with Blockchain technology
The Secretary General of the United Nations Organization (UN), Antonio Guterres, said the adoption of Blockchain technology would be positive for the organization. In this regard, he said: "For United Nations to better fulfill its mandate in the digital era, we must adopt technologies such as blockchain, which can help accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals."
According to the UN: "The Sustainable Development Goals are the plan to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. The 17 objectives are all interconnected, and in order not to leave anyone behind, it is important that we achieve them all by 2030."
Guterres is optimistic about the potential of blockchain technology since September 2018 where he stated that new technologies can help solve the problem of declining confidence in national institutions. However, he believes that cryptocurrencies have a problem to solve: "Organized crime networks lurk in the dark web, benefiting from encryption and almost anonymous payments in cryptocurrencies for the traffic of people and illegal goods."
The development of the use of Blockchain technology has grown significantly since the creation of the digital cooperation program. Through the program, the UN has developed a Blockchain tool that aims to prevent the exploitation of migrant workers in Hong Kong. They are also working on blockchain solutions for sustainable urban development in Afghanistan.
